1994-

Special Broadcasting Service (SBS)

SBS was announced in the late 70's as a spin off of the successful multilingual radio stations set up in 1975. SBS first started in April 1979 as a test, broadcasting various multicultural programmes on the ABC in Sydney and Melbourne on Sunday mornings. On 24 October 1980 at 6.30pm the service began on UHF 28 and VHF 0 in Sydney and Melbourne. It was called Channel 0 and was the first broadcaster in Australia to use the UHF frequency. In October 1983 0/28 expanded to Canberra, Goulburn and Cooma, all on the UHF frequency, and at the same time changed it's name to Network 0/28. In February 1985 it changed it's name to SBS. In June 1985 SBS expanded to Brisbane, Adelaide, Newcastle, Wollongong and the Gold Coast. On 5 January 1986 SBS ceased it's VHF transmissions, becoming the first sole UHF broadcaster. It expanded to Perth and Hobart in March 1986. In 1994 it expanded to Darwin. Since then and still today SBS has expanded throughout regional Australia.
